The Course

Standing on the first tee at Suburban Golf Club, you are met with a historic A.W. Tillinghast golf course, designed in 1922 at the pinnacle of his design artistry. Not well known among today’s players, Tillinghast was one of the best American golfers on the scene in first two decades of the 19th century; in the third, he produced some of the finest golf courses in the nation.

The proof of his vision is in the pedigree; over the years, 20 majors have been hosted on Tillinghast courses and six of Tillinghast’s courses are ranked in the top 100 golf courses in the world are located within 30 miles of Times Square. We like to think Suburban Golf Course is #7 in the list within 30 miles of Times Square.

Both US Open and Masters winners have brought home SGC tournament trophies, and Gary Player was heard to remark, "You have to play this hole single file,” from the 10th hole. As for the course record? It’s held by none other than PGA Tour player Ryan McCormick, with a 63. Essentially the same course it was the day the first members teed off, the only exceptions have included switching the 7th and 9th holes to improve walkability, rebuilding the bunkers, and converting the 14th green to a USGA green design. Over the past century, the landscape has remained protected by the growth of surrounding trees, strategic bunkering by the greens committee, and deep rough for the club championships. Just over 6,500 yards in length, the first nine holes at Suburban Golf Course sharply undulate, resulting in up, down, and sidehill lies. On the back nine, the nine tee areas and eight greens maintain their elevation, while the 18th green is dramatically lower from the fairway. Meanwhile, our head golf professional, who has played in the US Open at Olympic and was the 2008 NJSGA State Open Champion, is on hand to help members at every level navigate the course.
